There are different types of coils for different e-cigarettes but a coil usually consists of a metal casing with resistance wire inside and absorption material, known as wick. This is usually organic cotton and its function is to absorb the e-liquid in the reservoir.
A coil can differ in resistance, type of metal resistance wire and the type of wick.
The resistance of a coil is expressed in a certain ohm value. The lower this value, the less resistance there is. Less resistance means that the coil is capable of more power and can therefore produce bigger clouds of vapour. These kinds of coils with a resistance below 1.0 ohm are called sub ohm coils. These coils are used in sub ohm clearomizers and are supposed to be used for Direct-Lung vaping. This means that the vapour is inhaled directly through the lungs. Coils with a resistance above 1.0 ohm are MTL coils and are naturally used for Mouth-to-Lung vaping.
Coils can contain different types of resistance wire. The most common kind is Kanthal. Unless specified otherwise, the coil will almost certainly be made of Kanthal.
Other known kinds are mesh, ceramic and stainless steel. Mesh coils consist of a metal grid rolled into a cylindrical shape to maximize the surface area, which results in more vapour and enhanced taste. Ceramic coils have a ceramic casing that makes sure no old tastes linger around. Stainless steel coils are the only coils that can be used on both wattage and temperature control setting. Besides these kinds there are also titanium and nickel coils, which can only be used on temperature control.
You can also choose to make your own coils. These DIY coils can only be used in a RTA (rebuildable tank atomizer) and in a RDA (rebuildable dripper atomizer). Making your own coils can save up in costs and some people think the taste is better.
